THE COVERS
I get alot of questions about my sports preview covers sothis page will have all of the special section covers I do , the thought process behind them and even some out takes. sI want to note that these covers are ALL shot straight. I don't believe in shooting photos with the goal of adding things, or cutting it up in photoshop. These are all straight to the point and would look the same if I had shot them on film and processed in a dark room. I don't have a problem with todays technology, I just choose to do it the old fashioned way. Also includes recent magazine and CD covers!

an interview with John inside. It has also been chosen by the Farm Aid
people to use for promotion! |

Photo of Tommy Emmanuel on Acoustic Player Magazine, and online music magazine. This shot if from a shoot I did at Tommy's managers house in July of 2004. |
Photo of John Mellencamp for American Songwriter Magazine The funny story here is I told John's manager that all I needed was a broom closet and I could make it work. When I showed up at the venue I was taken to just that, a broom closet. There was so little room, I set up Crown Graphic in the closet and put a chair and my lights out in the hallway where he sat for the photo. I kept him for just over 1 minute! My goal was to get done BEFORE he told he HE was done ! |

9/28/04 University of Kentucky mens basketball preview cover I wanted something different than the normal photo of players from photo day with players wearing their beautiful white uniforms. This is a bunch of new comers working their butts off to get playing time so I wanted to do a playground type scene like we all see in the parks around our cities all the time and probably never think you could be seeing the next big college or pro star basketball players. Great guys and easy to work with! Look forward to more covers with them the next few years! |
10/6/04 University of Kentucky womens basketball cover shoot! Like the men, Kentucky has alot of high impact freshman coming in this year and so we wanted to show the new comers. My problem was I knew that no one would know who they were by face because they had not played yet so I thought we could do a relaxed shot in the locker room with each holding her jersey to see the name and people could match it up! Seems a little simple but I am into shooting relaxed situations and the team was all for it. |

7/27/04 Boyle County coach Chuck Smith winner of 5 state championships
When I was told the subject of this years High school football cover would be Coach Smith, the first thought that came to my mind was that he ends every season soaking wet because he always wins the championship and get the 10 gallon buckets poured on him so I decided he should just start the season wet! HHHe was actually not hard to convince and was a great and willing subject. I got to the school early in the morning and found a few locations I liked. I thought for sure there would be some running water nearby to keep him wet but was wrong. Toughest part of the shoot was filling a 10 gallon container with water and carrying it across the field. For those of you over weight or out of shape, carry around one of these buckets for awhile!

8/13/04 UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE RUNNINGBACK ERIC SHELTON I have shot Eric since he was a senior in highschool and he has always been good photos! He has some great intense expressions so when the U of L cover came up I , in wanting to keep it different from the UK cover, decided to shoot it really tight and focus on the eyes. I knew Shelton would be good for the face so I shot him and Mike Bush both just in case. Shot on Canon EOS 1D Mark II, @ asa 50. Unreal detail. |

University of Kentucky quarterback Shane boyd
Shane is another player around here who I have shot many years. This year he finally takes over as a starter and will be walking into the bright lights and high hopes of the fans, coaches and himself. I shot this cover three different ways, the first being a shot of him at the lockers looking over his shoulder signifying that this is the first year he won't have to be looking over his shoulder all the time seeing if he is being pulled out of the game. I used some grid spots on his face, his number and three more lights to light the lockers and helmet just right with the help of David Stephenson and his old Nikon SB 25 with built in slave for the helmet! When I shot this photo in the bathroom, I knew it was special but maybe for a poster, not for the cover , but somehow it hit all the editors the right way and is now a great shot to contrast the U of L photo cover that will both run the same day. Who knew?

8/9/04 Outtake University of Kentucky quarterback Shane Boyd |
Louisville Trinity quarterback Brian Brohm was the subject for our 2003 Football preview cover. I was given a time of noon on a tuesday afternoon to shoot the shot. Not quite sure what I wanted to do I went to the field a few hours early. The idea from the Sports department was to shoot him against a brick wall. THEN, later in photoshop they were going to put the faces of a bunch of famous quarterbacks that came out of Kentucky, like Johnny Unitas, and a few others on the bricks......THIS was not going to happen. I completely avoided any building type of shot so the photoshop massacre could not take place. I saw him in his full game uniform and decided to find him a T-shirt like one he would wear under his pads. I had him take off the pads to give me the walking to the locker room kind of feel after a game. Since it was noon, the light was not really on my side so I took 2 White Lightning 1200 heads and using basically bare bulbs, I underexposed the background to give me a "night" time feel. We then went into the locker room and shot some more portraits that were pretty cool but this was no doubt the cover. Sports loved it and didn't even ask about the bricks photo!
He went on to win Mr. Football in Ky, lead his team to a third state championship under him, and signed with the University of Louisville where he is now a freshman.
