2x + y = 17
To solve for y, subtract 2x from both sides;
y = 17 - 2x

To solve for x, subtract y from both sides;
2x = 17 - y
Divide both sides by 2;
[tex]x = \frac{17-7}{2} = \frac{17}{2} - \frac{y}{2}[/tex]
[tex]x=8.5- \frac{y}{2} [/tex]
