Why was it possible that lincoln would not be reelected in 1864?

It was a possibility because the war seemed to be at a stalemate and many believed that the country could lose or that there could be better presidents in the war era than Lincoln. However he did won in the end and the rest is history since we know what happened in the war and how it ended.
